Hambo 2: Hamtouchables

As promised Hambo 2 is now out! In this sequel you and your sidekick Bacon are detectives out to bust Pig Capone’s chops.

We wanted to make a bit of effort for this sequel rather than just stick some extra levels in so we changed up the theme (gotta keep my artist, robotJAM, busy)!

Gangster pigs sounded like a fun idea so we went with that. We also threw in a few new weapons and some extra puzzle features like wormholes. Yeah… they don’t really fit into the story but every game is made better with wormholes right?

This game has all the physics based fun that the first one had to offer: 36 levels, medals to be won, user levels + editor for those who want more. Hope you like it!

Thanks also to my brother, John and Rob’s friend Cathy McBurney for helping out with some level designing.

Ninja Bear

Ninja Bear, or Ninja Bear and Purple Teddy vs the Monsters under the bed (to give its full title!), is the latest from my brother John and myself. We also enlisted the help of our younger brother, George, since it turns out he has a bit of a knack for voice acting.

At first glance the game is perhaps nothing you haven’t seen before. Conceptually it’s pretty similar to Hambo (watch this space for Hambo 2, coming very soon!) and a host of other physicsy type games in the genre. However, this time we’ve focused the gameplay more towards solving puzzles than pulling off tricky shots and we think we’ve made something a bit different.

To that end we made the aiming nice and simple, giving a trajectory line to help you see where your shot will go. We also devised a set of weapons that allow you to interact with the environment and really make the most of the box2d physics engine. You can disintegrate anything (including yourself!), make things icy or bouncy, and there’s even an anti-gravity gun that allows you to send things flying up into the air. All of these combined can make for some really interesting challenges and we had a lot of fun designing the levels.

There are 44 levels of increasing(ish) difficulty and also 24 Yin Yangs to collect. Collect them all to unlock a bonus level that should keep you occupied for a while! Also, if that’s not enough ninja for you there are user levels to be played or you can get creative and try out the level editor to make your own. If you make something then you can copy a link to share it so feel free to post your creations in the comments below :)

Bad Eggs Online

Our first multiplayer game is out of beta. It has been a real eye opener releasing a multiplayer game. There is an incredible amount of work that you have to put in after releasing it to keep the content fresh and up to date as well as responding to criticisms, fixing bugs and adding the features that your players want to see.

We have put in a lot of hours trying to get this game to where we want it to be and have added a lot of new features after listening to our players. We’re likely still not done adding things but we feel that it’s at least at a stage now where it can lose the beta tag and we can start getting more players involved.

Huge thanks to everyone who has played and enjoyed the game so far and helped us get it to the stage that it’s now at. It has been far from a stress free release but I feel that we have learned a lot from this first attempt at multiplayer and I’m also very glad that a lot of players seem to be really enjoying the game.

We’ve had a great review here: Photonstorm.com and lots of positive feedback so far which is fantastic.

Hope you enjoy the game, look forward to seeing you online and in the forums!

Bad Eggs Online is in Beta

I’m excited to announce the beta launch of my latest game, Bad Eggs Online.

Bad Eggs Online is my first ever multiplayer game (hence the beta launch). It’s an artillery game along the same lines as Scorched Earth and Worms so it’s a tried and tested style of gameplay but we have approached the genre in our own unique way.

You play as eggs in our game and (if you create an account) you can level your egg up and unlock new shells to play as and new weapons to cause even more destruction. There are also over 100 challenges to complete in the game and for each one you will unlock a new badge so wear those hard to get ones with pride!

We’re very interested in hearing your feedback in this beta period so I look forward to hearing what you think. And please feel free to invite your friends to play against you if you can’t find anyone to play against! Since we’re just launching it is to be expected that you may not be able to join a game right away but as the word spreads that should change so we’d really appreciate your support.

Thanks,
Rob Donkin

Battle Beavers

I can’t believe it’s been over two months since we actually finished this game and we’ve only just released it! It took us a while to sort out a sponsorship deal with this one but it’s finally published at last. It’s another collaboration with my brother, John.

Battle Beavers is an RPG/Beat ‘em up where you play as a beaver named Bold who is suffering at the hands of the evil tyrant, Rangor. There’s equipment to unlock, stats to upgrade, plenty of enemies to fight, magic attacks and combo moves.

There’s also an epic final boss in the form of Rangor. Only the most hardened battle beavers will be able to defeat him in combat and restore peace to the plains… or something like that anyway.

I’m pretty happy with how the game has turned out. We enjoyed adding different attacks and enemies and testing the game was a lot of fun going round beating up enemies all day. So hopefully other people will like it too.

I got a friend to compose some music for us on this one and I hope you’ll agree he did a great job. Check out his soundcloud site for more tracks by him: http://soundcloud.com/jonathan-taylor

Also, just counted up and this is my 25th game! Seems like a milestone worth mentioning anyway :)

Update: Thanks to Mr Gee for this awesome Battle Beavers track!

Synapsis 2

Ready for something strange? Enter the world of David Carter. A world where nothing really makes sense and yet everything is logical. Welcome to Synapsis 2, a point and click adventure collaboration between robotJAM and myself.

This is really robotJAM’s game since I had nothing to with the first Synapsis and the concept is all his but I was very happy to be invited to work with him on this, having collaborated on a number of other point and click games in the past (The Dreamerz, Panda’s BIG Adventure, Panda’s BIGGER Adventure).

We planned out the whole game beforehand, coming up with a number of themed rooms and a bunch of puzzles to go with them. It was pretty fun getting creative on this one. Then I left robotJAM to get on with the art so that I would have something to work with when it came to doing the code. The art is definitely what stands out in this game and I hope you’ll agree that Rob did a fantastic job. That combined with the eerie music and sound effects make this a very surreal and atmospheric experience.

Code-wise the game didn’t present too many challenges so once the art was more or less in I was able to go through and hook it all up and turn it into a playable game. My favourite part is the wibbly effect on the doors (made possible thanks to a great class that I found here).

Good luck, have fun, and be sure to let me know how you get on in the comments. Oh, and if you want to play the first game then you can find it here: Synapsis

P.s. Some little known trivia: the weird looking eye in the tv in the hub room that looks around creepily is a video of robotJAM’s eye.

The Adventures of Red

This is the first game that I have made with my brother, John. It’s a point and click adventure about a small yellow explorer called Red and his quest to find a chocolate muffin.

This game came to life in the first place because we wanted to make a game that we could share the coding work on. With John just starting out we thought it would be a good idea for me to build the main framework of the game but still allow him to do some of the code. That led to the idea of having a selection of mini puzzles that you solve one after the other.

We ended up working in a more traditional artist/coder relationship with John doing all the art (although he did code several of the rooms as well). I don’t feel that it’s very practical to have more than one coder on a small flash game such as this but in this case I think that it influenced the design of the game in a positive way. Choosing to make a game with mini puzzles led us to the idea of the castle which turned it from a collection of puzzles into a full adventure.

That in turn meant that we could add a main character to the game. Initially ‘Red’ was called ‘Pico’ (a name that I still kind of prefer I think) but we discovered that Pico was already a popular game character so we decided to change his name. I do like that we called him Red (yes, I am aware that he’s yellow!) and it’s fun seeing some of the comments appearing about his name.

Update: John now has his own website to showcase his games: JohnDonkin.com

Blow Things Up! 2

The second Blow Things Up game is out! After the success of the first one I’ve got high hopes for this one but time will tell. It’s not just a few extra levels tacked onto the first game though, it’s a completely new game with lots of extra features.

I redid all the artwork and introduced a bunch of new characters all with different properties. There’s the good and bad ‘Things’ from the first game but now there are also Bouncy Things, Heavy Things, Balloon Things and even Fire Things!

Another big new feature is the level editor and the ability for anyone to make and share levels with the world. I’m really looking forward to seeing what you can come up with so get making levels :)

Once again there are 42 levels to complete and trophies to get on all of them to add a little extra challenge. For those hardcore fans of the game (possibly dangerous pyromaniacs) there’s also a secret level. How to get to the secret level will be revealed if you complete all the trophies (although I’m sure if you’re keen enough it won’t be too hard to find out by other means).

Thanks to my brother, John, for helping design some of the levels. John is just getting into game development so you can expect to see our first collaboration soon!

Animal Raceway

Animal Raceway is another collaboration with artist RobotJAM. Pick your animal and train them up so that they can compete with the other animals in their league. Progress through the leagues to try and win the premier league.

This one’s all about the training mini-games and upgrading your stats. The actual race part is a simulation and is entirely dependent on your statistics. There’s a bit of strategy involved in picking which race to run in as well as you get a choice of two. Make sure you pick the race that will best match your strengths.

The main difficulty in making this game was coming up with the mini-games and making sure that they were all fairly evenly balanced. Then setting the difficulty of the other competitors and maintaining a challenge as you progress to new leagues was another important consideration. I think on reflection we did a reasonable job of the difficulty and balance although early feedback does suggest that perhaps some of the mini-games aren’t so balanced (it seems that some players find reactions and speed games easier than others). But I still don’t think that that really detracts from the game too much and actually I think it’s pretty fun to play.

The music in the game was done by Brian Holmes and I hope you’ll agree that he did a fantastic job.

P.s. Stay tuned for Blow Things Up 2! Should be going live next Thursday.
